On the other hand, this also means many clients still don’t know what they should consider before buying a cement tank trailer. Since many cement tank trailer suppliers are available in China, it can be hard to determine which one to choose. It’s here that exploring the key features to consider when buying a cement tanker trailer becomes invaluable, ensuring you select the best one for your business.

1. SIZE AND CAPACITY

As a buyer, the first factor you need to consider is the size and capacity of the bulk cement tank trailer. You need to know how much bulk cement powder you want the tank trailer to haul; this will determine the size and volume of the cement tank.

My suggestion is if you only use the tank trailer to transport cement and fly ash, the V-shaped cement tank trailer is enough for you. It’s not expensive and is easy to maintain.

But if you want a tank trailer to transport several types of medium—not only cement but also cement slag, plastic particles, grain, polystyrene resin, alumina, carbon black, feed, quartz sand, and flour—the W-shaped dry bulk pneumatic tank trailer is your best choice. The only disadvantage of a W-shaped tank trailer is its price, which is higher than that of a common V-shaped tank trailer.

3. DURABILITY AND CONSTRUCTION

Tank Material & Thickness

In China, common materials for cement tank bodies include Q235 carbon steel, 520JJ high-strength wear-resistant steel, Q304 stainless steel, and 5182/5083 aluminum. The metal material depends on the medium being transported. For example, if you just transport cement, the Q235 carbon steel is good enough, but if you want to transport food-grade flour, you must choose Q304 stainless steel or aluminum.

Regarding the body thickness, if you choose carbon steel material, the thickness of the tank body should not be less than 5-6mm, especially in areas with rough roads such as Africa. Please note that insufficient thickness can lead to potential cracks in the welded seams, increasing the risk of powder leakage. Therefore, ensuring the right thickness is crucial to secure the tank’s longevity.

Tank Welding Process

Generally, the cement tank doesn’t leak easily unless the tank body is damaged by violent collisions (car crashes). Another reason could be poor-quality welding, which could cause open welding or crack problems if the welding seam is not strong, leading to leaks after one or two years of use.

To prevent this, we use a high-quality robotic welding process at HIPO. This technique strengthens the tank, making it rigid and resistant to pressure, which helps avoid changes in shape and prevents leaks at the welded joints. Simply put, our welding process ensures safer and more reliable tanks.

DISCHARGE SYSTEM

The discharge system of China’s cement tank trailers mainly includes a diesel engine, air compressor, and discharge pipeline. These components determine whether the cement tank trailer offers a smooth and fast unloading process.

China cement tanker trailers are equipped with Weichai engines and Bohai air swing-type compressors. The Weichai engine and Bohai air compressor are competitively priced and offer reliable performance, so most Chinese cement tanker trailer manufacturers choose them as the standard configuration.

At HIPO, we also provide high-configuration options like the German Deutz engine and screw air compressors for cement trailers. These can greatly improve the speed of unloading and minimize the failure rate. However, due to the higher cost of the German Deutz engine and screw air compressor, only a few clients choose them.

Fluidization Device

Generally, Chinese cement tank trailers use 8 to 12 air-permeable belts for fluidization. At HIPO, we provide 12 such belts because they can speed up the unloading process.

Additionally, the tilt angle of our Hipo tank and side slide plate is greater by 2-3 degrees than the industry standard. This allows for faster material unloading, with faster rates reaching 1.5-1.6 tons per minute (the discharging speed is just 1.3-1.4 tons in the industry standard).

Suspension System

Another important part to examine is the suspension system. It is used for carrying loads and improving driver comfort. There are two main types of suspension systems: mechanical spring leaf suspension and air bag suspension (air ride).

Most customers choose the mechanical spring suspension system because it has a high loading capacity and is more robust, making it suitable for heavy loads and rough terrains. In addition, its competitive price and low maintenance make it a popular choice.

In addition to the spring suspension, you can also consider air suspension, which provides a smoother ride than spring suspension. What’s more, by adjusting the air suspension, you can adjust the trailer’s platform height or lift the axle to reduce tire wear. However, the price of air suspension is at least double that of spring suspension, so only a few customers choose air suspension for cement tank trailers.

Axle

Regarding the axle, you need to consider the axle count, carrying capacity, and axle brand. The axle count is determined by cargo weight; the heavier the cargo, the more axles the trailer needs. Axle carrying capacity includes 13 tons, 16 tons, and 20 tons. Famous axle brands include China’s Fuwa axle and Germany’s BPW axle.

For example, if a customer wants to buy a 50 cbm cement tank trailer, generally, some customers choose 3 units of 13-ton axles, some choose three units of 16-ton axles, and some customers choose 4 units of 16-ton axles. The major reason for these differences is that each country has different limits on axle count and carrying capacity.

For axle brands, it’s best to choose a famous brand like China’s Fuwa axle or Germany’s BPW axle, as these brands offer guaranteed quality, less maintenance, and long service life.

If your budget is tight, you could consider highly cost-effective, slightly lower-quality brands, like the ZY axle or the L1 axle. Of course, there are very cheap axles in the Chinese market, but poor-quality axles can break down easily during transport, requiring downtime for repairs, which could affect your business reputation and make you lose future business.

Tire

Choose between tube or tubeless tires for your cement tanker trailer based on your load weight and road conditions. Tube tires are sturdy, good for heavy loads, and handle rough roads well. They cost a bit more and can blow out suddenly if punctured. Common tube tires include 11.00R20, 12.00R20, and 12.00R24.

Tubeless tires, while less prone to sudden blowouts, are lighter and fuel-saving, so most customers choose tubeless tires. However, they’re not as good for heavy loads or bad roads. Common tubeless tires include 12R22.5, 13R22.5, and 315/80R22.5 tires.

Painting Process

In China, two popular trailer painting processes are used. Choose a painting process that fits your budget and quality needs.

The first is Powder Spraying Painting with KTL coating technology, which prevents rust and lasts 7-10 years but is more costly.

The second method uses cheaper polyurethane paint, which only lasts 3-4 years. Some factories use cheap paint, so they only last 1-2 years, increasing maintenance costs.

5. SAFETY FEATURES

Safety should never be compromised. The cement tank trailer should have a WABCO emergency valve and ABS (anti-lock braking system). These features can increase braking performance, prevent accidents, protect your investment, and save lives.
